Standard Operational Procedure for Drilling Rig Spare Parts Management
1. Objective
To establish a formal process for the receipt, handling, storage, installation, and documentation of drilling rig spare parts. To achieve operational safety, improve equipment uptime and reliability, and ensure accuracy of inventory.
2. Scope
The scope of this procedure includes all persons involved in the requisitioning, receiving, handling, storage, and installation of spare parts for drilling rig equipment.
3. Definitions
3.1 Critical spares: Parts that are critical for continuous and safe operation of the rig with no immediate replacement.
3.2 Rotable spares: Parts that can be refurbished to stock after initial installation (Pumps, motors etc).
3.3 Consumable spares: Parts intended for one time use (Seals, gaskets, filters).
4. Procedure Steps
4.1 Identification and requisition
4.1.1 The maintenance department identifies a spare part requirement either through preventive maintenance activities, or upon affixing failures to the rig.
4.1.2 The part number, description, and quantity required are verified against the supplier's equipment manual and master parts list.
4.1.3 Maintenance will submit a written requisition to procurement or warehouse for each part required.
4.2 Receipt and inspection
4.2.1 Upon arrival, the package will be challenged for external damage prior to acceptance.
4.2.2 The part will be checked against the purchase order and packing slip to verify the part number, description, and quantity.
4.2.3 A physical inspection will be undertaken to establish any visible damage, corrosion or defects.
4.2.4 Any required Certificates of conformity, Mill Test Certificates or other validity documentation will be checked and filed according to the associated part.
4.3 Handling and storage
4.3.1 Parts will be picked using the right tools and techniques for the part.
4.3.2 Parts will be moved to an appropriate storage location. Critical and rotable spares will be stored in a clean, dry, and climate controlled storage area if specified.
