Standard Operating Procedures for Auger Drills pre-operation preparation An adequate preparation is key to ensuring safety and efficiency in the process. This procedure includes the following steps:
1. Site Inspection and Utility confirmation. Before starting work, contact your local utility location services to accurately mark the underground pipelines; gas, water, electricity and communication lines. This is a safety requirement procedure is required to eliminate, hazards, serious accidents.
2. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Inspection The operator must wear complete personal protective equipment including safety glasses, heavy gloves, safety boots with steel toes, and long-sleeved work wear. Hearing protection may be necessary based on noise levels of the equipment.
3. Equipment Status Inspection Mechanical Drills: Inspect and check the drill bit and drive unit for any loose bolts, cracks, and/or any other visible damage. Powered Drills (Gas/Electric): Inspect the fuel and oil levels, control switches, and cables. Check that the throttle or power switch is in the "off" position. Hydraulic Drills: Inspect and check the hydraulic hoses for leaks and verify all connections are secured. General Inspection: Confirm the drill bit is sharp and installed securely. Dull bits put more load on the operator and have a potential for kickback.
4. Clear Work Area Remove all debris (rocks, branches, or anything that could trip you) from the work area and maintain a safe distance from any unauthorized personnel.
